Fixed Metal Braces
Fixed metal braces are the ‘original’ type of orthodontic treatment and have been used for many years. In fact, there is documentation of their primitive use as far back as the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, although they didn’t really advance until the early 20th century.
Thanks to their ability to move large numbers of teeth (usually all of them) in the most effective way with a high degree of precision and often in the shortest possible time, this type of brace is still the most commonly used – even today.
Metal braces in the 21st century are much improved, thanks to their smaller and more attractive design, yet they still work in very much the same way.
With fixed braces, small metal brackets are attached directly to the surface of the teeth with a dental adhesive. Thin metal wires are inserted through the brackets and held in place with elastics. Over time this wire is bent and shaped to encourage your teeth to move. As the wire slowly returns to its original shape it pulls the teeth, moving them slowly to the desired position. A fixed brace works by moving the crown of your tooth first and then focusing on the root, bringing both into alignment over several months or years.
Do fixed braces hurt?
Any brace can feel a little uncomfortable at times. Often this is when it is first fitted or you’ve just had a tightening appointment. Standard painkillers should help with any pain. Sometimes sticking with a softer diet when your teeth or gums are feeling sensitive can help.
With fixed braces, the wires and brackets can sometimes rub slightly on the inside of your cheeks and lips. If they do, we can provide dental wax to help.
Fitting your brace:
Before a brace is fitted your teeth and gums will be fully checked to ensure they are all healthy. It may be necessary to extract teeth if there is overcrowding. This will make sufficient space for our remaining teeth to move. Spacers may also be placed over your back teeth to create small gaps.
Your brace will be fitted in an appointment of around an hour. Each bracket will be attached to a tooth with the wires then slotted through and tightened.
Regular check-ups
It’s important to attend regular appointments which will be scheduled in advance. These appointments are a chance for us to check that your treatment is progressing as expected. We can also make sure you are comfortable and answer any questions you might have.
At each appointment your brace will be fully checked to make sure it is functioning correctly and the wires will be tightened to help your treatment continue successfully.
After treatment
When your treatment is finished your brackets and wires will be carefully removed at a debonding appointment and your teeth will be cleaned and polished to remove any remaining adhesive.
We will advise you regarding a retainer which will help keep your new smile looking great.
Looking after your teeth when you have braces
It is really important to look after your teeth well during any orthodontic treatment. Particularly with fixed braces, there is the increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease as food can get trapped and missed when cleaning your teeth. We strongly recommend three monthly hygiene visits to ensure the teeth and gums remain healthy during the course of your treatment.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day (or after every meal if possible). If you can’t brush after a meal then ‘rinse’ out your mouth with water. Don’t chew chewing gum as it could get stuck in the metal parts.
- Interdental brushes can be used to clean around the wires, brackets and elastics. A disclosing solution can help to highlight any missed plaque.
- Remember that very hard foods can damage wires. Avoid particularly hard or sticky items and cut fruit into small pieces so that it is easier to chew.
- Avoid chewy toffees and similar sweets which can get stuck in the wires or break them.
- Avoid sugary food and drinks, which can decay or discolour your teeth.
- Always attend your regular brace check-ups and dental appointments.
Fixed brace accessories:
Occasionally the need for alternative accessories such as face masks, headgear and biteplates is required in order to positively enhance your treatment. Always use these items as instructed in order to ensure your treatment progresses in the correct way.
Today fixed metal braces are smaller, more attractive and often more comfortable than ever before. If you would like further information on how you could get the smile you really want please call us today to book an appointment.
